The aim of my website is to share, and curate ideas about protecting and preserving Florida's manatee population, by providing a comprehensive roundup of knowledge and detailing the advances in digital technology that may be able to stop this species and other marine life from slipping into extinction.
Developments in technology and communication are impacting our world at an ever increasing rate. Digital technology is enabling scientists and researchers to analyse huge amounts of data very quickly and efficiently and use this information to make informed decisions about how best to protect and preserve species and ecosystems.
One of the most exciting new developments is digital twins, and specifically the European Digital Twin of the Ocean project.
But we are running out of time to make meaningful changes as human-created problems, like global warming, pollution and habitat destruction, race to out-compete the natural world. Potentially, the most powerful weapon for good in the 21st Century is digital technology in the form of social media and communication systems. Today, however, it is more often used for manipulation and misinformation: news travels fast, but fake news moves six times quicker.
Those who care about the natural world need to mobilise and use social media to influence governments, decision-makers and the public to ensure that the choices we all make are for the common good of the planet and for all its inhabitants.
Working together, digital processing and digital communications can create a paradigm shift in marine conservation. Let's start making it happen today.
